Catalyst error codes in an X reg TINO

got the dreaded shiny engine warning light the other week, had the code read:

P0420 - Catalyst efficiency low bank 1

garage cleared the code and told me my cat needed changing but this was not urgent and funds are tight as ever. light came back on after some dodgy engine sounds and it reads as the same code.

read somewhere that as an X reg i dont need an approved type cat but not sure if this is true.

also can they be 'cleaned' using stuff in a motofactors shop to buy me some time and is it a job to fit a new one that only a garage can do.

any help would be appreciated.

It can't be cleaned.
Get your emissions checked to see if it is the catalyst. It could just be a faulty post catalyst lambda sensor giving an incorrect reading.

cheers, i think it is definitely the cat as the engine is sluggish and almost struggling to breathe. also the light came back on 20 miles after being cleared.

seen a couple of non certified on ebay around £80, are they worth it?

I have the same error on my Nissan Almera N16 2004. 1,5 petrol, 72kW.
P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshlod (Bank 1)
TID: $01 CID:$01
Rich to Lean sensor thershold voltage (constant)
Max:95
Current:99
TID: $02 CID:$01
Lean to Rich sensor thershold voltage (constant)

Current:53

My problems started with cylinder 4 misfire, replaced my ignition coil but problem returned and I just shook some cables on coil and everything is fine now.
I had some issues with power loss and acceleration problems after ignition coil No.4 was changed so I changed front lambda probe (got one form ebay.de genuine Bosch). Problem with stuttering, jerking and power loss is gone but my check engine light is still on.
I was at several mechanics and one checked Catalytic Converter and said it is fine so I suspect second lambda probe... I mean I hope it is second lambda probe.

So is there some way to test second lambda probe?
