Which Lowering springs?

Get the Apex ones.

It'll look ok. Almeras ride pretty high to start with so although 40mm drop is ok, only coilovers can bring it down to 'low'. For the price and the handling improvement of springs though it's good.

Yup, with just lowering springs it'll be fine for UK roads still.

Here's mine, it's on coilovers lowered quite a bit more than 40mm. Gives me minimal trouble with UK roads tbh it'll be perfectly fine on 40mm springs

ive seen 60mm lows, im my head thats way to much for a standard kyb gas shock to stand, but still its much cheaper than coils. any opinions?

Mine is about 80mm lower on the front and 50mm at the back on coilovers.

My engine brace does hit things occasionally, but only on tractor tracks.
