Airbag light

hey guys....
was driving back from the girlfriends house tonight, when all of a sudden, the airbag light just started flashing, dont know why the hell it would, havent hit anything..

i found this on the sr20forum for resetting it..

1. Open driver's door
2. Turn ignition switch from "OFF to "ON"
3. Press driver's door switch at least 5 times within 7 seconds after turning ignition switch "ON".
SRS is now in Diagnosis mode.
4. "AIR BAG" warning lamp operates in diagnosis mode as follows:
1. on (7 sec) off (2 sec) on (3 sec) off (2 sec) on (3 sec)....
Intermittent problem has been detected in the past.
2. on (7 sec) off (2 sec) on (3 sec) off (2 sec) on/off (.5 sec)
system has problem and needs to be repaired.

i followed the procedure, then the light kept flashing in 3 second intervals.. (as opposed to 1 second when it originally came on) tried it again and the light went off.. then after taking it for a test drive, the light came back on after around 10 mins...

havent done anything to the car.. took off the back wheel tonight to have a look at the brake pad as it was making a lot of noise, took off one bolt, but couldnt get the other off.. put the bolt back on and left it.. other than that, its had a full service on Friday...

any one any ideas?!

thanks

Unfortunately due to the complexity of airbags i'd say your best bet is to take it to Nissan. All Nissan airbags should have a Nissan person inspect them after 10 years anyway, it says so on the sun visor of UK spec Nissans, so you're only pre-empting it by a year hehe :)

A fault has been logged ont he Airbag control unit, will need a diagnostics machine to either source the code from the DIG code, or once its been repaired (ie. splice in the wiring) you need to clear the codes off it to take the light away, the method above won't work as the ecu will still have the fault logged so it will always bring the light up

£35 to shot it on the computer and verify what the problem is

it will detect what the problem is - and from there you can rectify the issue

if you have reset it (process you took) and it has again then flashed back up - it means the problem still persists, and that it is ongoing.

It may well be an earthing problem - have you been doing any wiring - or fiddling about in the engine bay/dash area?

Q

35quid to fix it "unless" it needs a new component or any wiring it will be more. Also if one of your airbag "crash" sensor's are faulty that will need changing. All depends what code comes up if you tell me the DIG code il bring it up on my pc and tell you what it is bro. Dont always be fooled by fault code's though just because it says "airbag control unit" doesn't mean "change the airbag unit" as it could be the feed's going to it or a faulty sensor giving a dodgy reading!

cheers for the reply lads, i cleared it last night after the second time, but its stayed off for now (fingers crossed) i've been driving around all morning, getting the brake pads etc.. and the light hasnt showed its ugly glow all day.. hopefully will stay off..
in my process of getting the brake pads, i took a trip into a nissan dealer (main one in ireland to be exact) the lad in parts said that they might not be able to plug it into the consult they have due to the fact its a japanese model.. so i'm confused.. if nissan wont look at it.. who the fuck will?!?!!??!?

**1. on (7 sec) off (2 sec) on (3 sec) off (2 sec) on (3 sec)....
Intermittent problem has been detected in the past.**

this was the lighting sequence that popped up after i the procedure, once this comes up, i just done the procedure again and it cleared.. but then of course, the light came back on.. i done the procedure again and the same sequence came up.. then done it again and cleared it... hasnt been on since..
i would be more worried if the second sequence came up as it states 'system has problem and needs to be repaired.' *Fingers crossed it wont*

@ quickdraw, the only messing around i've been doing was a service (oil filter, gear oil and brakes) and also fitted an induction heat sheild between the induction kit and the engine... nothing else i can think of..

any one elses experience or comments?! thanks for the help so far lads!!!

mate nissan are talking utter bollox. (more likely all the tech's at that nissan garage are hobo's :p)The nissan Diagnostics module contains 75% of all imports, and pulsars are the most common imported car in reality...we have a nissan module up at our garage but im in newecastle mate:(

cheers man.. i gathered that after visiting two garages... they dont want to know me.... its really a pain in the ass.. is there any other places i could possibly get it checked do you think? i mean.. would it be possible that a back street garage would have the consult system that nissan use?

depends of what diagnostics machine they have. If i remeber correctly AutoDiagnose carries a pod for Nissan's which includes imports. But garages have to buy the pods seperate (Around 100ish pound a pod) so not all garages will have the same pods (sounds confusing, it is) The only other diag machine i am familiar with is bosch KTS but that is CRAP for nissans lol.....If you take it to a japanese specialist's (but an independant one not a dealer) i would of thaught they would have them, but then again i only know of one in newcastle, nowere near you bro sorry :(

cheers man, theres only a few 'jap' specialists around here... but some of them will only entertain you if you drive up with a skyline or an evo... suppose i'll have to check around.... how much would i be expecting to pay for a consult anyway? i know you said its 35 pounds with nissan.. but would an independent place charge more?

my garage it is 35pound (you pay for an hour's diagnostics even if it doesn't take an hour) You also will get charged even if they find no fault codes!! You will not however be charged if they cannot connect to the module itself. The highest iv ever seen was 45quid round my way. Hope iv been helpful :) I still think nissan would be able to do it, surely the airbag cu's carn't be that much different, import or not....am probably wrong on the nissan bit thou :p

Found someone who said they'll try to hook it up to their diagnositic system, but its not nissan, should i go ahead with it?

also, i've reset the airbag light again lastnight, so its not on at the moment, is there any point in getting it checked while the airbag light is not flashing or would the faults still appear? please help as i'll be going to meet the guy at half 12, and its going to cost me 50 euros!! dont want to waste my money if its not worth it you know?!

just to update you lads,

i got in contact with a lad from an Irish forum who worked for Nissan, only problem was, he was a good distance away from me down the country, but I decided to pay him a visit as he was sure his consult system would plug into my pulsar.

An hour and a bit journey down with Lucino_vzr and we ended up waiting nearly a half an hour to seem him as he could only check it after work, sound bloke and helped alot, he worked in parts, but had one of the mechanic lads over to give some advice and info aswell... plugged the consult system in and got error:

ASSIST A/B MODULE
[OPEN]

from the Nissan FSM it say's

Front passenger air bag module circuit is open.
1. Visually check the wiring harness connection.
2. Replace the harness if it has visible damage.
3. Replace front passenger airbag module .
(Before disposal of it, it must be deployed.)
4. Replace the diagnosis sensor unit.
5. Replace the air bag harness.
the mechanic basically told me it had something to do with the passenger side airbag, so we undone the glove box and had a look, the guy explained what were the components for the airbag (they're the ones covered in yellow tape) and that the problem could have arisen from the fact that the wire that connects to the unit was very tight and there wasn't much slack on it, he said this could possibly have caused the fault.
After finding this out, I'm a bit more relieved that at least now i know the problem.. I reset the light last night and it hasnt come on since.. nearly 180 kilometres done and no problems so hope it doesnt come back..

sucess bro! That is what i meant about when the if machine says "passenger side airbag" it isn't always the component itself. Anyway i told you independant garages can hold the information now, If you know where to look you can get anything really, For example my garage can code ford diesel pumps, something ford claim is impossible unless you go to a ford garage, bunch of n00bs! hehe. (Dealerships are not aloud to hold private information about their cars after the block exemption act, this also mean's warranty are not effected as long as OE quality parts are used)Anyway mate im glad you got it sorted and at least now you know were to go in the future :)

hope i was of some help!

Nice one, Consult is the way to go for the fault finding. When the user diagnostic mode throws out an all OK code but then the light starts flashing then what can you do without consult apart from check every component manually...

cheers lads, epecially mark and syms for the help over the last few days.. would really have been lost with out you guys!!! the consult system is actually so handy for finding faults! and i'm glad i got it diagnosed before i just went and replaced the airbag ecu or do something stupid! thanks again lads!!! :D

Hi there I'm new to the forum but have just bought an Almera GTi 98, got if for 600 notes so not complaining about the condition but the Airbag light is on ive tried using the directions above to clear the light but it wont even enter diagnostic mode its permanently on does not flash.

Any ideas??

If its permanently on theres probably a consistent fault there that keeps re-occuring, the airbag module etc could be faulty or a broken/bad connection.Have a look around the seats and check the airbag wires, you will prob have to get a diagnostic check done by nissan.
