Why didn't Nissan turbo the Almera/Pulsar N15?

Hi all i've been reading the N/A vs Turbo debate and I thought to myself why didn't Nissan build the N15 as a turbo in the first place?

I mean they had the perfect engine in the Pulsar Gti-R. So why not just put it in the N15? Does anyone know why they didn't? :(

Rumbling turbo engines were long gone in late 90's Japanese Hatchbacks....the race was on for high revving low litre cars. The emissions were getting stricter and stricter and Variable valve was the future.

yeah tru that kurt,

but i do think they should lauch another hot hatch to compete with the likes of the CTR, VXR, mazda 3 mps etc

if they did i reckon it would be awesome :D

as kurt sars emissions.. mid 90's cars started gaining weight and loosing power as crash tests got tighter and emissions regs stricter.. :( but as tech moves on turbo's are coming back..

Definately, the technology is there now for a very efficient FWD 2.0 Turbo hatchback...would be good for Nissan to have a slice of that market. Whole new chassis, VXR end performance....would be a cracking car.

we all know it will never happen though, nissan now is mostly focused on 4x4 off road machines...in this country anyway, i mean renault have the megane sport and clio sport etc so why cant they come together and make a decent nissan hot hatch...why? because nissans are known as grandad cars and no one would bite. i mean look at the sunny GTi, it won car of the year but people still went out and bought the golf GTi, this is one reason why i love nissans...they are so under rated

I'd disagree - nissan makes 4x4 onroad machines, imitation chelsea tractors that couldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding.

The only one worth mentioning is the Navara. Been in one and it pulls well and looks mean as hell. Shame it's still in the budget range of 4x4s. Nissan just don't give the budgets to their cars, GTR and 370z excluded.

Corbs you know what's going on with that Navara? YD25 power or something swapped in? PM me cause I'm going off topic here :O.

the almera wasnt exactly a hugely popular car either was it...

they never really intended to make the gti. it came later than the pov specs.

Would love to see some of the GTR spirit trickle down to the smaller cars but you need a good base car that will sell millions to regular punters in order to justify a hot-hatch based on it. A hot hatch will be unlikely to sell in big enough numbers to justify the expense of development of a new car on it's own. So it'd be a hot micra or nothing right now, I guess (hot Note or Quashqi does not appeal),

On the other hand I do think Nissan need a real replacement for the Almera, getting sick of seeing so many Astras, Focuses and Cupras around. Then again what are the chances we'd actually like what they came up with? GTR aside I've not seen a new Nissan I've liked in half a decade.

C'mon Nissan; ditch the frenchies, bite the bullet and go up against the Us/Euro mid-range hatches with something state-of-the-art with decent power and retro good looks then tune and supercharge the fscker so we can all get one!

im gonna come right out and say it. the last good looking average joe nissans i've seen were the K11 micra and the N16 almera.

why is that... just. give us. a new. K11 with an SR20DET and superb handling.

Lots won't believe me but it was after those cars that Renault dug it's claws in. That's why the ones after went all weird. Nissan changed it's direction too, clearly going for sensible and practical family cars only (thank god they still kept a high end performance plan though).
