Ricks BP0 GTI

Steven has his dyno tested at the same place so comparitive figures.

I know, that's why I think mine needs tweaking. Not much more HP thaqn your though my HP graph is pretty much a straight diagonal line. Got a scan of yours?

I've got them but my scanner is being ghey just now. My HP is pretty diagonal also.

ok update!

rick has bought Catcams 514's. mega cams. biiiig.

fitted em last night along with my 503's, problem was, ricks wouldnt start, no matter how hard we tried we couldnt get it to fire up. ended up pushing it into the unit and abandoning it.

fortunately! i got let loose early from work today and fired eagerly next door to the unit to get it going!

checked all the cam timing specs, all BANG ON. so we arent a tooth out and the timing is dandy. what now.

phonecall to dave bull results in replacing the catcams with stockers, but oh shit. it doesnt start with them either...

another phonecall with dave and the dizzy timing was advanced past its normal range, resulting in a few coughs and it firing back to life. BRILLIANT. turned it off, knocked the dizzy back to 15 and it fired up again normally. thus confirming that my cam timing was indeed correct.

at this point it is 5pm and im dying in the heat, but i must persevere. put the catcams back in and fired it up and it started first time with my foot on the gas! but then it stalled as soon as i released and wouldnt start again, tried advancing the dizzy again to no avail. back to square one...

whipped the plugs out and they were soaked in fuel... interesting... so dried em off with a lighter and turned over the car with no plugs and the dizzy disconnected, plumes of fuel flying out the plug holes. that'll be our problem then!

finally, after 4 straight hours in the baking sun, the car fired to life , again with my foot on the throttle. let it get a bit of temperature into it and eased off the throttle, and it stood and blobbed away of its own accord.

and this is the story of my victory over the gti.

here is a video, since i know you only came here to see that! and hear it.

also fitted his HRC fuel pump too. so we ready for de dyno!

Ohhhh so if you drive in say 2nd gear at about 2k was there any jerkyness or abit lumpy? As i found when just accekerating it drives normal it when the car at low revs for speed bumps etc that it feels abit rough

Mines's like that with the JWTs. Just have to feather the clutch a lot under 2.5k. Light flywheel does not help ; slightest increase or decrease in throttle or clutch is magnified. The revs drop quick and when the engine catches you're sure it will stall. Takes a bit of faith and work to get it sussed. But when you floor it at 4k in 2nd, change up at 6.5k through to 5th it's worth the pain in traffic jams.

Definately think a remap is required to get the full benefit, though. Esp with other mods.

What do you guys think about timing, was reading that too much advance with these sort of cams overcooks things and that the cams are designed to work best with stabdard timing?

bang on. Just what mine like. Glad that proves there no issue with car it just the cams at fault. Remap a must as there no way these be fueling right. Im running 15 for my timing

Wraith, that will deffo be the flywheel making your car a bit harder to drive than stock, S3s keep a car driving like standard! The 514s definitely seem to be a rougher cam comparing Rick's and Ross' idle. Nice work lads!

theres no fault with the cams... you just have to learn to drive the car.

Yes i know they not faulty what im saying is im glad it the cams that making it odd and jerky and causing huge fuel usage so remap defo going to smooth it out. Also bring the power band down a 1k as it too high imo 6k pull is immense lol

I've lost all power below 2.5k but it's in no way undriveable. I'm still getting used to the ACT clutch and XTD flywheel as well. I've done about 45miles of town and motorway driving and no hiccups so far. Give it another couple of days and they'll be run in and i'll give a proper view on the results.

I've booked a dyno run this Friday so we'll see what that says about the power and fueling.

I think i only gained about 11hp peak with mapping, but it made it alot smoother, and really broadened the power band.

Without mapping, it'll be interesting to see how this does.

Sounds meaty on the idle.

Wraith, I had about 6 dyno runs at Duncs with a couple of different fuel pressures and timings, however not all combinations were tried due to time. I'd get along to him (for consistency of results) for an hour and get them all tried (x2).
